there was not a house with four walls left standing. This did not prevent the doughboys thereabouts from appearing altogether at home. If they had any disliking for their dugout homes, they didn't show it. While were waiting, an aeroplane flew overhead toward the German lines. I heard the German guns go "Boom-boom-boom." Then little balls of black smoke blossomed all around the plane and a few seconds later came in succession the distinctive, crackling sounds of bursting shrapnel. It was a right pretty sight. The plane completed the mission and returned unhit though the shrapnel continued to break all around it. I saw the same thing repeated twice before we started homeward again. And now, having got this story out of my head I'll resume answering your #5 letter. I want to endorse very heartily your plans to see your youngsters educated. I hope the war will be over and
