than the prevailing weather at this time in the States. The old ship has been rolling a deal all the way. Two nights ago our steering gear broke and we were buffeted in a divil of a gale for twelve hours. We lost two hundred miles on the day's run. Last night the sea got pretty bumpy again and rolled us around in our bunks mos' dref'ly. Today, too, the going has been so rough that everyone has had to stay inside. The promenade deck goes awash every now and then. If my writing is jerky and uneven, it is due in part at least to the fact that half the time I'm writing with the desk below me and part of the time with it uphill from me, and
