smooth, winding roads that led through odd old villages, the frowning walls of old castles atop knob-like hills - how they all blended into a long delightful panorama. It is wonderful how the charm of this country takes hold on its visitors. I had felt it before, of course. Some of my companions had not. They exclaimed over and over in their delight. "Do you wonder that all the world is coming to fight for France, asked Colman Frank - who was seeing the country for the twelfth time. Nobody was surprised. Just a little time with the people and amid the beauties had explained much. In the evening we arrived at ---------------, a very old city. Here we were to stop to await assignment. Officers here live in the barracks formerly occupied by French troops. However, preparations had not been made for our coming, so we had to search the dark streets for quarters in hotels and inns.
