to say "good evening." The older folks are very cordial too. And there is much fraternizing between French and American soldiers. They find some marvelous way of talking to each other. While I was writing two French soldiers who had been dining paused to chat. They wanted to see my writing, and were happy when they found they could make out a word here and there. I had an interesting little chat with them. Here's another phase of life here: One of the fellows was at a bath-house this afternoon. The lady in charge told him that most of the people here take a real bath about three times a year. She refused to believe that Americans bathe as often as once a day when they have the facilities. I think, however, she must have meant three baths a year
