to have things as easy as we could back in Washington or Minneapolis - or Nevada. Many times I have thought of the easy, luxurious time I had as an officer at Snelling with all the advantages of the clubs and theaters and so on of Minneapolis handy. Nothing like that here. A French town at night is like a cemetery - nearly. There's a reason. Last night the warning was sounded signifying that the Boches had crossed the lines somewhere. They didn't come near here though; and they must not have penetrated far, for the signal that all was clear followed very soon. I was fast asleep at the time - knew nothing of the incident until this morning. After all, we're pretty well off. Up there at the front a lot of the Sammies and their officers are now living in the trenches and dugouts under burst of shell and hail of bullets
