Eighteen February 20, 1918 My dear Daphne,- My disposition is at least fifty percent improved. The weather warmed up a bit today. One could actually sit through a meal in the mess hall without wearing an overcoat. And this afternoon I had a good ramble through this picture book country. We were out on a mapping and observation hike that took us out the marvelous macadam highways and across the open fields. I don't know whether it is merely because the French landscape is different - new - that it thrills more them a similar outlook at home or whether it is because it really has more of the qualities that the artist looks for. I constantly have the feeling that I am walking in a painted picture. Perhaps that is because there is so much color and contrast and blending of color in a scene here.
