evenly distributed and their bare trunks are symmetrical. All in all, everything fits in the picture. There is no discord. For certain personal reasons I prefer the outlook at home, but I find delight in that which greets me here. I can understand why an artist might prefer to paint what his eye can see here than what it could see in the newer American landscape - of the pastoral sort. Well, the afternoon in the picture and the open air was very refreshing. Incidentally, in the course of the walk, we had a chance to observe some practice artillery fire and other interesting phases of the training of our men for the war game. No practice with dummy guns and shells over here. The real things were booming all afternoon. It was fun to watch the shells kick up the dust on a distant hillside and then count seconds until we got the sound of the explosion. Above, every now and then we'd hear
