The week's work was very interesting. We had an afternoon hike one day that permitted us to see something of the pretty country hereabouts at the same time that we were learning important things about map-reading. And we had interesting talks from a French lieutenant who originated one of the new things in use in this war. He murdered the King's English terribly. We hinted very broadly that we could probably understand him better if he used French. But he struggled on, and we understood most of it. I went with several of the boys last night to dinner at the White Horse inn. It was one of those quaint places one reads about. You enter through the kitchen and stop to chat a moment with Madame as she turns from direction the preparation of the dinner. Then you go on into the dining room and
