a letter to "Goody," whom you know from long and intimate association. I believe you admit her disciplining of you with a slipper in your earlier days had something to do with your acquiring your present sweet submissiveness. I hope she won't think I need the slipper for giving her that chummy name. I had an interesting chat at dinner tonight with an old English captain. He taught me a clever trick of illustrating the sound of battle at the front by means of a cork and a piece of string. I shall bring that back for you. That club is a great place to fall in with fascinating persons. In many ways it is unique on all the battle front. I think I'll have to write it up after the war if someone doesn't beat me to it. Shucks! What a lot of good stories I have
