3 who had just come out saying today he'd as soon take his chance in the trenches as in the streets of New York. And of course I'm most of the time far behind the trenches. I wish you could see in action as I have the fine American spirit that you describe so well in its relation to this war. The men and boys at the front are surely admirable. Without a kick, - on the other hand, in unfailing good humor - they sweat and freeze in the dirt and mud of roads and trenches living the hardest kind of life, braving all necessary dangers. They seem absolutely fearless. A few days ago I watched a working party doing a task out in the open with shells dropping all around. Yet
