Forty-seven. April 7, 1918. Honey girl,- This is by one candle power. My lamp doesn't march any more; the reason being no doubt that I haven't refilled the kerosene bottle. In the view of the thrifty French mind light and heat in a chambre a coucher are pure luxuries. Consequently, you have them only if you buy the wood and petrol yourself. As to light, the tiny lamp in my room is so little better than a candle that it is hardly worth keeping supplies anyway. Twice this afternoon I started to write to you.
