it is always "horizon blue" which is not easy to see in the distance. The uniform before the war included a blue coat and red pantalons. The latter made such a good target that the change in uniform had to be made early in the war. However, one still sees the old uniform worn by officers and men back of the lines. It was of such good stuff that it takes a long time to use up the old stock. There's a popular fiction that the same pair of trousers has been customarily handed down from father to son through several generations. You're right about the Sammies - "they can't be beat." (Incidentally, they don't like to be called Sammies. It's too bad, for we much need a common name for them.) Every day
