Doremus Jessup the newspaper editor up in Fort Buelah Vermont is frandly disturbed. We cant begin to follow thru all the events of the summer. Windrip having been nominated for Pres. is steadily building up a hugh following of his henchmen largely from among the young men, into an organization knows as the Minute Men - which holds out the lure of uniforms and many parades. These Minute Men grow to be a potential power strictly under Windrip's control- just as are a counterpart of Hitlers shock troops. It is evident that Lewis draws largely upon the experiences of his brilliant wife Dorothy Thompson expelled from Germany for writing all too truthfully
