Chicago, Ill. Sept. 14, 1942 Dear Frances: Thought I might have a letter from you last week but suppose you have been busy. The Mayo Clinic wasn't far wrong in its prediction, was it? Well, once cancer gets started there doesn't seem to be much that can be done about it. I know it has been a trying experience for you, especially with Lloyd having to be away. I got back here on Tuesday of last week. Tried to do as much as possible while I was home and did accomplish a lot. Fear I was a bit hard on mama as when I was so "worky" she tried to pound around also and I could not make her go to lie down enough. However, the work did need to be done and there wasn't any prospect of anyone else to do it. Canned - 40 qts of plums - without sugar; 13 qts of tomatoes - all
