817 - 19th St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa January 2, 1942 [1943] Dearest, A year and a day and five hours since you made me Mrs. Davis, and it was 24° below (now 32 above) last January and a foot plus of snow. The ground is pretty well cleared now but there is still enough to make a general whiteness even if the grass is trying to work up to the air. The ice is all melted from the walks, but driving is still slippery, especially on brick paving. Hazel told me the other night she would never forget how proud and pleased Mother looked when we came back to the house after we were married. She remembered that Mother said "now this is Mrs. Davis." I hadn't thought about that, but I do remember her saying it. And Hazel was remarking how happy Mother looked then. I believe she did feel good about us and I'm glad to remember that. If she could have lived longer without being in misery it would have been good, for we could and would have made some pleasant times for her. But if she couldn't feel comfortable and felt bad
