817 - 19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa January 3, 1942 Dearest, Now its 10:30 and all company has gonehome, the house is restored to order and the furnace has been put to bed. The clock is ticking merrily on and I'm writing to you at the walnut table. There I have both light and heat conveniently located. If you were here the picture would be perfect and you'd be seeing it so you wouldn't need me to describe it to you. Marion Bruner used to be Mr. Blackstone's secretary. She is studying religious education in New York City. She goes back to school tomorrow, and so Johanna and I decided the only time we could visit with her was breakfast this morning. So she came over at nine and we had real good visiting until 10:40. Then she went to church and we started getting stuff planned for supper tonight. Johanna accepted her fellow's proposal last night before they came out here. He seems a nice fellow - aged 41 and doesn't look it. He is Ames graduate and was the Oakdale farm manager before being drafted four months ago. So Johanna didn't do much heavy sleeping last night. I'm glad as she is happy and I think they ought to eventually be able to work out plans. War certainly complicates lots of peoples lives. For supper there was just five of us, McIlvains and Steeles.
