817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa January 1, 1943 Dearest, A year ago now we had already retired about a half hour. January 1, 1942 was a queer and unique day. I doubt if either of us ever had felt fore God forsaken in our lives than we did for a while. As far as I was concerned, I didn't feel natural or normal in reactions until Mr. Hodgson talked to us. He wasn't familiar to you like he was me, but his reassurance really yanked me back to normal sense of proportions or something. Its like I already whispered to you in a secret one night since, I really prayed like a trouper that day. We had great trials in the bad weather and consequent uncertainties from it, mother's not feeling well, change of attendants, hazards of getting stuck and all the rest of it. But I need not enumerate any of those things, you know them as well. But in the ceremony proper and the moment of calm right afterward when we kissed it seemed like all was right and come what may we had the real love
