817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa September 17, 1942 Dearest, The second letter today. Bet you think I think I'm smart. Well, I don't exactly, but if I really get this off I think I'll be doing better than usual. And I have already finished one to Mother, finally. I've been thinking about settling the estate. Mother said once something about having an appraiser list all the furniture except stuff that was yours. Not to report to the court, but to divide then in money or piece by piece whichever Geo and I wanted. The quilts, sheets and stuff Rose and I can divide by counting and the use we'll each have for them just like we did the stuff they took when you were here. And I'd like to do that soon. I'm wondering about keeping the house and farm in partnership with an open estate until the war is over. I'm afraid things may change us all too much to make as pleasant a settlement possible at some distant and unknown date as if we did it sooner. What will happen to either George or you in relation to military
