817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa September 20, 1942 Dearest, Charlie McCarthy is on the air now and I am listening to the radio and have my writing place rigged up at the card table beside the radio. I waited all afternoon for Betty to come over and at 7 she called. Now she wants me to come over to Olvers where she is packing her junk into the car. I might have gone out for a ride in the country if she had come in the middle of the afternoon like she said she would, or I might have gone alone if I'd had foresight to see how the day would go. It was such a beautiful fall day, blue blue sky with white cloud puffs and sunshine. Such pretty days almost hurt because they remind me of good exploring weather we shared so many times. In spite of the good sunshine I slept until 10:20 and was I surprised! I woke up at 8:40, thought "well, time to get up ... pretty day" and the next thing I knew it was 10:20! I don't know when I've really slept soundly that late. So I did not go to church, in fact haven't been away from the house at all yet. I washed a couple pieces of clothes. My biggest project was getting the furnace fired up well. I finally had a nice little fire and now the thermometer says 74 instead of fifty two. When the bathroom got
