Richmond Hotel Spartanburg, South Carolina October 8, 1942 Dearest, There is about an hour in which to write this before the mail is collected at the desk. I suppose you are getting ready to go out on your night problem. I just got back from the American Grill. For health's sake, and only for that reason, I had a lamb chop. Lamb doesn't taste as bad to me now as it used to, but I still lack enthusiasm for it! Your picture is looking down here from the left side of the desk just like you were reading what I wrote as I went along. Maybe this letter will surprise you? Maybe you figured I'd write just like I always do when I am not going to be seeing you? Wasn't today lovely weather? I hope you are not too tired. I did lots more sleeping today than I thought at five o'clock that I would need. Maybe you'll get some napping done tomorrow morning. I hope so. And if you get to come tomorrow night I'll try to incorporate better so you can get some more sleep. For one thing, I'll not sleep at all tomorrow afternoon and then I won't be so wide awake. And other things too -- well, I don't make too big promises about them! I got Effie's remembrance today. A little gay kitchen towel. Just cotton but one "raised"
