Saving...
817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa October 26, 1942 Dearest, Now it is eight-thirty on my birthday. Evelyn and I just got back to the house. We went to Amona to the Ox-Yoke Inn for supper. It was a good meal. I proposed we got and I drove Polly as she drove her car the last time. Then she paid for my meal. I hadn't wanted that as I thought up the idea of going but she insisted. This afternoon the staff had the best time surprising me. I was very busy with intake and they got a cake and put 8 candles on it in some animal candle holders that belonged to Jay. They got it into the stenographers room and the candles lit before I saw it. Then they called me in and Jay met me so I did not see all the staff 'til a second late. Then I had to cut the cake into sixteen pieces and serve everyone present. It was good cake and such a surprise.
