817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa December 25, 1942 Dearest, Nine twenty and I am at Woodsides. Ive been here since two thirty and had a nice Christmas dinner. Helped with dishes, had a lesson in cribbage. Mr & Mrs Woodside beat Ardy and me by one point in a game. Then we lost three games of Five Hundred! So our elders play better (also more) than we do. Harlan, her brother, was home part of the time and very pleasant. He looks in much better health than a few months ago. It has been nice over here. They are pleasant and realistic and I felt at home without being homesick. People sometimes seem to have a natural ability to be a friend and others seem naturally tactless. This morning Ardy called at 9:30 to tell me when to come for dinner. Hazel stopped a minute before they went out to her folks. Then (I had already had my salt water and fruit juice) I read the paper, listened to the radio, made a real good fire and
