No. 75 Pvt. Lloyd Davis, 37420240 Co. C.-9th Bn.-1st Repl. Depot A.P.O. 761, c/o Postmaster New York, New York Mrs. Lloyd Davis 817 19th St. SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa May 31, 1943 Dearest, Ardy had two classmates over for lunch. One is now a Minneapolis Aunt Lena, and she was a most interesting person. We had a swell meal. I even helped a little in the cooking process! When you get home I'll be glad to cook for you. It will be worth the bother if you are going to help eat it. A corporal back from Africa was on the train to home at Minneapolis. He was built like you, a little bigger and a little younger, but a quiet mature decent fellow He looked tired and didn't smart off like boys in U.S training camps. I didn't speak but briefly to him although I have a million questions saved. He asked about your service and I'll not be forgetting how he just looked approval when I told him. I dreaded your being assigned at Croft like you were, then you helped me to understand and be tough. Now I'm glad you are strong and able to help me be too, and I'm glad you are not on some gold brick mission. I just wish I could do as much as you do in helping. We looked at stores but didn't buy anything as it was a holiday. I went to the hospital to see Aunt Maud. She & Alberta stand one shift for Uncle Earl. He looked fair, [but is?] a real sick man. I didn't intend to see him but they had told him and decided on my going in. He [illegible] "Lloyd's Laura came." "And clear from Cedar Rapids." Then back to our home again. Love, Laura [smiley face doodle]
