No. 78 Pvt. Lloyd Davis, 37420240 Co. C. 9th Bn. 1st Repl. Depot A.P.O. 761, c/o Postmaster New York, New York Mrs. Lloyd Davis 817 19th St. SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa June 3, 1943 Dearest: Mrs Holton and Mrs Thede each to mail from Africa today, so I'll get some soon. Theirs always comes before mine. Then I have some when they have none! ¶ I took Mrs Hunt & her daughter out to the eating place just east of Old Manion road. Mrs Hunt goes to St Louis tonight for an interview with Red Cross. She isn't keen to go, but they called her in. Then we put Jean on the MT Vernon bus and I took Mrs Hunt home. Then I went to Leones. ¶ We took the Plymouth and drove up to the boat house. Jack took us for a short ride on the river. There was a lot of wood in the water. Only a few boats out so we had a quiet, easy ride. I like it if no one gets smart and tries to do tricks or take other silly chances. Leone is more scared of boating than I, I guess. We will have to paint the elephants again when we have time, as they are all faded. ¶ Emmett Murphy went April 12 to work on the Alaska road. I just learned that yesterday. His wife was down to see Emily and told her. I haven't talked to anyone at the shop so I otherwise wouldn't have heard. Berhends asks about you often. Mr Storm was visiting here too and asked about you. ¶ The grass is growing in high gear again. I'll have to get after it. I'll be in my place soon. Love, Laura
