No. 122 Pvt. Lloyd Davis, 37420240 Co. D 39th Inf. Regt. APO 9 % Postmaster New York, New York Mrs. Lloyd Davis 817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa July 17, 1943 Dearest, Only a half day at the office. I had one no good adventure. I dented Polly's front teeth on the back of another car. No harm done at all except to Polly's beauty. Harpers said they could make a new job of it because I didn't break any of the grill bars. I wanted so not to put a mark of any kind on the car while you are gone -- or ever for that matter -- but I did, and it was the first one. I shopped for groceries and got a box of peaches. I've canned five quarts now, and there are 19 peaches yet raw (and I ate three!) They are a good quality for this year, better than many last year. Joanie came. I gave her a key so I don't suppose she will be back until the small hours as Bill is with her. He is now an inspector at Collins. The principle of it makes me mad because he got an army discharge to farm and he was an agronomy major. With his experience as farm manager he ought to be able to do more for his country in food production. No double pay for Sundays farming! It was another day of perfect weather. When you get home we will [illegible] Stone City on such pretty days as these. I'll be in my place. Love, Laura
