3 spineless and untouched by the need to do things because of the war. Most of the people in the community are solidly behind the service men. We work extra hours, buy bonds, and don't feel "put upon" by any ration rules or other restrictions. Most of the town now has someone dear to them in the service. But because we are a democracy, we can all be as different as naturally inclined. Earl doesn't see why Red Cross has millions of bandages being made up all over the country. He figures the nurses could do them! As if the surgical dressings project was a made-work job! I'll bet he'd have Hazel donating some time if he thought they would ever be used on him. Emily mentioned someone who eats sometimes there bringing sugar. My stars, if they are suffering for sugar I'll eat my shirt. With all the farm stuff they have, and rations books
