817-19 St. S.E. Cedar Rapids, Iowa December 1, 1943 Dearest, It was a year ago today I drove to Des Moines to meet you. And drove back before I got squared around to arrive at the same place you did! The weather is more mlld this year, and there is no snow. But I do have a cold that compares to the one I had then! The gremlins hung around a while when I happened to think this afternoon about last year on December 1. Then they turned into good gremlins because I remembered how good a time we had. And how that is only background to the home life we will have when you come back. I had my hair done tonight, and the girl did very well. It was the first time I had this particular operator. She followed the natural waves, and the hair is longer all the time so it makes a soft roll without being skinned back tight. It is the same in trying to get beauty shop appointments as any other kind, "the help situation"! It takes much longer now to buy groceries, shop in the department stores, get a restaurant meal. Help is scarcer and inexperienced. I ate at the Harmony then, and picked up the head nursery teacher who was trudging along wearily with groceries in her arms.
