the Community House and was going home to 28 St S.E. I took her home, as she looked so tired and she was running toward her bus. It developed she had heard just today her husband was to report for service. They have children aged 4 and 7. They have really got down to fathers now to meet the quotas. She knew he'd have to go, and that is why she applied for this job. But it is a surprise nonetheless. So I stopped at Leone & Jack's then. Leone's folks dropped in too. Mrs Schaffer is feeling better than last winter. Mr. S. looks like always unless maybe thinner a bit. Then home -- fixed the furnace -- and now ready for bed. The Cairo conference was just announced on the radio tonight. History happens so fast nowadays one can't keep up with it and carry on a full time job besides! So my armchair government has to go on vacation part of the time. I'm "frozen" in my job so I can't resign it to take up the armchair strategy! December 2. These are two days' letters in one envelope this time. Today was a busy one. Miss Stief from the regional office of Federal Works Agency in St. Paul was here most of the day. Miss Murray -- Alice Kirwin's assistant at the Community Chest and I conferred with her. Then Miss Stief and I visited Mr. Deamer. The old fellow was in a fair humor and we got a lot of items settled. Then I talked with Mrs Hunt. Then home, fixed up the fire. Then off to a Christmas
