3 General critical opinion seems to be that Flagstad was never better than that night - that she surpassed herself. The woman certainly is incredible. This was the first real opera that I had ever seen, so I was quite thrilled. I have been listening to the Toscanini and Barbaralli broadcasts at every opportunity, and am much interested in T.'s current Beethoven cycle. Belatedly, Mary Ellen, I wish you a very happy birthday; I am sorry that I cannot do so in a more tangible form, but perhaps it will not always be like this. At any rate, my sincere congratulations and best wishes. Thank you again for the money Love Joseph
