Seabees Camp Parks, California HDQ C-D 26th U.S.N. Const. Batt. Camp Parks, Calif. 25 February 1944 Dear Lloyd, Your letter of October 29 arrived last week. It must have been sent to the South Pacific as we left for the States rather suddenly. It has been five weeks since I was visiting with Laura at Cedar Rapids. Perhaps she has written you quite a bit about me. For the most part, it seems a long time since we left the States. we sailed from San Pedro on a naval transport carrying some six thousand navy personnel of various sorts, but mostly Sea Bees. As the ship was fast, we reached the French island of New Caledonia in twelve days. we camped there for about a week then boarded a smaller transport for Guadacanal. There were two destroyers and a slow old freighter.
