Sea Bees Camp Parks, California with us. Because of this one slow ship we spent five days in making the thousand mile run up to the island of Guadacanal. Our escorts located two subs and tossed them a few ash cans which quieted them - permanently from all evidence the destroyers could gather. Guess it was a good thing we didn't know what a shipwreck was like at that time. we saw enough of that after we landed, as the battle for the island was far from won. We had plenty of beach head for landing, for the Japs were farther up the beach and back ion the jungles. Our outfit never was in combat, but was on the receiving end of air raids, especially on moon light nights, until last November. even so, we lost only four men, and several were wounded by enemy action. All in all we were very lucky on that score. However, malaria was bad and nearly one third of the battalion
