is gone. We visited two yesterday. One was elegant. It stood on a hillside, surrounded by trees and approached by winding drives and gravelled paths through a fine park. Below glimmered a lake, fed by a clear, bubbling brook. By way of outside advantages there were stables and a garage and tennis courts. But, unfortunately, the chateau was occupied and the occupants were not inclined to move out. They received us with the supreme courtesy characteristic of the French and ushered us through some beautifully furnished big rooms to the main reception "hall," and they discussed our mission with us with interest, but not interest in any proposition relative to their own chateau. The young master, convalescing from a wound received in the trenches, offered us his old castle in the village across the way. We went to see
