Ninety-eight June 14, 1918. My Dearest One thing is certain - I ought to learn more French here than I was getting at N--. There I was all the time with Americans and rarely had need to use French. Here, besides using at meal times, I find the people with whom I live eager to be friendly and to give me practice. Of course I've improved my knowledge somewhat in five months but not half as much as I should have. There is seemingly no limit to the progress on can make. I know how to carry on a conversation so that I shall be understood, but I want to do better, to learn to speak fluently and with little accent. The Mrs. and her daughter want to send post-cards to you and Mrs. Hartzell, so don't be surprised if one walks in some day. If you reply, be sure to use English because they are
