picturesque - the tree bordered river stretching away to where the old cathedral seemed to rise out of it. I had known the scene when I came here two years ago. It was an odd experience to consider the vagaries of fate that had brought me back to it. I have thought of you a great deal today, somehow with a bit more wistfulness than usual. because of our being so far apart with so little hope of seeing each other for a long time. I suppose the inclination to see the dark side of the cloud is due to the fact that I am on the fag end of the period that elapses between arrivals of your letters. Isn't it too bad that the letters can't come every day or two or three instead of in bunches with a week or more between? Then perhaps the elation from one would last until the next arrived. But perhaps I should then be having depression every few days just before the next letter came. It is natural that anyone who feels deeply should have reactions from supreme happiness to something near despair. I should rather suffer
