husking corn, and around his neck he wore the long knitted scarf which the Norskys all wear. Some way an end of the scarf was caught in the machinery and the old man died a very stuffy death. When Emil began to work, the lady of the house came to him to make excuses for the old man, and she assured Emil that he had intended taking a bath just before Christmas. I thought this was one of Emil's lies until I learned that it is really a custom with those people to bathe at Christmas time, whether they need it or not.
