my return from the Marne front. I had lived at their house, you know. When I left Madame wouldn't take any money for my use of her delightful room. So I left some with Lieutenant Hartzell instructing him to induce her to take it. In her letter she says she didn't take it and she doesn't want to hear me speak of paying. She was entertaining me to repay the debt of France to "our dear allies"! She makes me believe that the war would hardly have been worth while if I hadn't arrived! Her generosity is overwhelming -- and, I must say, rather extraordinary. The thrifty French do not usually decline payment, though they rarely fail to give full value in service and friendliness.
