147 August 22, 1918 My Dearest,- I am sitting here in my P.D.Q's and wearing them only because I don't want to stick to the chair. If I were in Iowa I should have to sigh and say grimly, "Well, it's good for the corn." Here there is no corn, and the wheat doesn't need the heat because the wheat has been harvested. It is most unusual, such a night. We are high enough that the warmth of daytime quickly disappears at nightfall. I have no theory as to why it is hanging on tonight. Heaven knows I'm not complaining. Although this has been about the hottest day of the year it has been easy enough to bear. And when
