150 25 August, 1918. Daphne, dearest,-- It has been a nice Sunday and now I'll finish it properly by writing a note to my nice wife -- quite the nicest wife i've ever had. Mangan and I drove out to the hospital train for lunch as we had planned to do. It is on the siding at a little station about ten kilometres distant. I felt like a colt let loose in the pasture from the moment we started. The air was like sparkling wine and the sunshine lying on sweeping fields and woods simply magic.
