August 29, 1918 -- 153. Sweetheart o' Mine,-- This is the second time I have come to bat today. But my first attempt was hardly a letter; it was a questionnaire. I have had things pretty much to myself all day as the other officers have been away. I ate both lunch and dinner in solitary state. The others had been expected back for dinner, but when, after waiting forty minutes beyond the usual time, they had not come, I told the kitchen force to bring on the food. This was done to the tune of dire threats from Martine as to what she would do
