1/31/1919 Dear Wif, - If I can make this borrowed pen work I swear you shall hear from me yet again. Since two of yours came in I'm owing a word to you. As near as I can make out you carried one of 'em around for three days before you mailed it. I'll remember that for the time of need when you find unmailed letters in my pockets. That was a right nice letter from Helen. It sounded much more mature than her previous letter. Big city life I spuz. Wha's that bunk that was in the peppers about a row in a café in Coblenz. I never hearn tell of it before your letter: the bunk or the row t either one. All the café parties I went to before the 'flu' got me very nice 'n' gentlemenly.
