it straightened out at once. I had a lively day yesterday. At noon I went to lunch with a correspondent. In the evening I took Harold Chamberlin of Iowa City to dinner and saw him to his train for one of the leave areas. We had a fine visit. When I got home I found Commandant Larzac of Marshal Fock's staff here. He got out some maps and gave us a very complete lecture on the Battle of Verdun. It was midnight by the time he had finished. A chummy letter from Uncle Emil has just come. He says it is 30 below in his county. B-r-r-r. I had a letter yesterday too from Julie. It was dated Jan. 18. As the latest from you was marked Jan. 9 I am hopeful that today or tomorrow
