Saving...
in N.Y. It began to rain shortly after we had started and kept it up for some time. I didn't get acquainted with anyone at all the first two or three days and it was too funny to have perfectly good Americans come up and accost me in faltering French. Everyone believed I was French, because I'm dark, I suppose, and because nearly everyone on board was French. There was the queerest assortment of Y.M.C.A. workers on board. For instance there was a male quartette that was composed of what were formerly Jersey City policemen. Some of their stuff you could listen to if you couldn't escape, but the rest of it was rank. Oh pardon! They were K.C.'s, come to think of it, but the Y.M. element was even worse.
