church - first all the men and then all the women. We were not even allowed to sit beside them in church. The men sat on one side & the women on the other. The church was horrible. Everything was hung with the same sort of heavy black draperies, from the ceiling to the floor, and there was not only the priest and his retinue, but the ghastly crew that carried the coffin about, headed by a man in black knee-breeches & a peaked, three cornered hat, who carried a sort of axe over his shoulder and looked, for all the world like an old time executioner.
