The mass and miserers were horrible. Wierd, uncanny things that caused one of the daughters to faint. I learned after that M. Coulon had composed them. There were miles of candles which had to be picked up and set in different places on the floor at regular intervals, and when one considers that they must pay for each candle, and for the mass, and for every additional prayer, and that poor people cannot have any of this but are poked away with some sort of acid thing that eats them up so the grave may be used again - the whole thing is simply ridiculous & a farce
