10 Nov 1944 Dear Earl: Just saw a clipping from g.g. with picture of you making a speech, and noticed that the people there were all awake - of course the picture didn't take in the whole crowd. You must have had an interesting trip in Europe, we can trade a lot of tales when I get back. I'm just leaving new guiena this morning by plane for the admiralty islands where I have been assigned as welfare & recreation officer - The naval base I'm going to is the largest in Southwest Pacific, so it sounds like a good deal. Sure glad to get the hell out of new guiena after a month here - the japs can have this place as far as I'm concerned. I have been having some conferences with geo. Halas (owner & coach Chicago Bears) the last few days aboard his ship he is head of welfare & rec
