Address - 3223 Gainsville St. S.E. Washington, #20, D.C. 4 August 1934 Dear Earl-Ruth & family While I am sitting here in a hot lecture room trying to stay cool or get cool rather, I will drop you a note. I must apologize Earl, for not thanking you sooner for the much appreciated (illegible) Gazette. Seemed like being nearer home, to be able to pick up a home paper. I left New York June 24th, having finished my work there. Went back to Iowa for twelve days before reporting back to Washington Navy Yard. Expected to do a lot of visiting while I was in Iowa but found Helen's mother in the hospital when I got there June 26th. Spent most of the time between home and the hospital until July 2nd when she passed away. Funeral was July 4th and I left for Washington on the 5th so didn't have much actual time to myself. I am here at the Washington Navy Yard Gun Factory, getting some instructions on new type guns and weapons. I like the work very much as it is very interesting but you probably know what Washington summer weather is. Hot and sticky and all together very unpleasant. However I did find a very fine place to room and board. It is in southeast Washington and up quite high, so that there is a fine breeze every night and the nights have been very comfortable. Expect to be here until about September 10th or 11th and then hope to be sent some place for permanent duty. Have no idea where, but it is possible that I may be assigned to the Transportation Branch in either Minneapolis or Seattle. Either one would be OK with me. I had a very nice visit with Gov Stassen before I left Ft. Schuyler. He remained there 9 month after I left, but has since left. Don't know where I went from there. I think about you folks real often
