36 Die Geschichte von Davenport. 5. Kapitel. A gem peeps form the glorious flood That rolls its bright wave from the mountain to sea, Amid battlements there has the warrior stood An recounted the scenes of carnage and blood That attended the steps of the foe as he trod The path of his destiny. A race that has gone to another clime Long lingered around this beautiful isle; Their deeds embellish the record of time; The breakers still chant their requiem's chime As they hung along in their course sublime, With foaming crest and dimpling smile. But changed is the scene, and changing still, As we gaze on its face - yet wild and green. Its verdure has fed the clattering mill, And its future stirrs up the soul with a thrill, As the forest that crowns the neighboring hill Looks down on a livelier scene. The deer and the bison have fled to the plains, The stern warrior no longer reclines in the shade. Of the battlements nought but a ruin remains, And nature no longer her power maintains Save to weave o'er the landscape in beauty's own chains A spell that nought human may ever invade. Art, enterprise, science, combine to attest That this gem of the valley is brilliant and pure, Health closed its pinions and stooped down to rest, And bade industry seek this bright spot in the West, Ever leading along all that's richest and best, And longest in time to endure.
