Jan. 12, 1918 Dear Karl, I got your letter, written the day after Christmas, in good time but have been pretty nearly swamped with things to do. We've been running a heavy schedule of classes in officers' school and I've had to take care of collecting & paying mess bills. Did I tell you I'm mess officer Bob, now? That's just a little detail on the side, in addition to company duty. I guess I'm supposed to dream out menus & things so as to get that done without interfering with my lessons or my drill. I landed a five day Christmas pass. I went down Saturday evening on the Rock Island to Cedar Rapids, and it was so late that instead of waiting an hour for the first interurban Sunday morning, I ran for the second car. At the Jefferson I found a note from Gwendolyn, so called her up and went to the college [dun?] for breakfast with her. I went down to Mediapolis, Monday afternoon, and came back here Friday. I saw Meg for a few minutes, but was pretty busy and didn't get to see a great many people. Meg was in Des Moines visiting Janette [Rongal?] the latter part of her vacation. She went out to the Camp once and wanted to find you but didn't know how. Then she returned to Janette's and found a letter from you forwarded to her at Janette's. If your letter had been forwarded a few hours sooner you might have had a pleasant visit and again Meg might have caught the measles, as
