36th. Inf. Ft. Snelling, June 9, 1918 Dear Karl - I'm a heck of a letter writer. I think about you every once in awhile and wonder how close you are to a commission and how things are breaking, but I don't seem to find the time for many letters. We are all hoping that we'll be shipped to France this summer as we have received about 1700 recruits within the last two weeks bringing us up to the new war strength. These men are National Army men from Ohio, W. Va., & Indiana, good stuff. Some of them are college men college men have been scarser than hen's teeth in our outfit. We had one in our company last fall but we sent him to the 3'd O.T.C. I suppose you'll be getting your commission pretty soon. I got my promotion last week. Silver bars are rather nice-looking I think and the $166.67 looks even better from where I sit. It was especially gratifying to me that my commission dated back to October 26, 1917 carrying over a hundred fifty dollars back pay. I hear that Paul Rockwood is at the 4th O.T.C.; Capt. L.P. Sieg is in France, Chamberlain is at the O.T.C., Louis Penningroth in Russia, Les Randall in a truck outfit in France, the Iowa River is rearing to go, and two captains of the 36th. Little & Wilson have been made majors in the N.A. and sent to Dodge. Other news is scattering. What do you know. Oh, yes, Bob Masson has been sent to Ft. Sheridan as to the junior R.O.T.C. camp as one of
