two officers of the guard downtown I am O.D. every third day. The two captains take O.D. the other two days so that half the time I drill I am company commander, & as a matter of fact I have been in command at all but one drill period I was out so that makes it a bit nicer than it was in the other company where I was third in command. Our work is not very exacting and is more interesting than straight duty. We don't drill much and as O.D. I have six interior guards, from ten to twenty prisoners, & a little section of the M.I.T. campus to take care of. Then I'm on the phones, responsible to the major for the seventy two sentries downtown, but there are two officers of the guard responsible to me for them so it's not much bother. I was on duty downtown for a little while following the blowing up of a million-and-a-half gallon tank of molasses last week. Fifteen were killed and five or six dozen injured when this tank-fuel swept across a block of houses & smashed 'em flat.
